Supporting Adult Survivors as Parents in Domestic Violence Programming

This training is for all advocates: adult focused, youth focused and program supervisors.

On any given day in shelter, children and teens who stay with their parent survivor comprise the largest percent of residents. Althought some advocates say “I don’t work with kids so I don’t need to know how to engage with them,” it’s time to challenge that outdated thinking. Including child survivors in programming better supports the family holistically and adult victims as parents. In this training, you will learn why it’s important to improve shelter programming services that reduce secondary victimization during interactions with children and teen survivors. You’ll understand how batterers expose children and adult victims to ongoing fear and harm and how this victimization affects them cognitively, developmentally and emotionally. Trauma-informed resources for children and adults as parents will be offered.
