More than 70 advocates gathered at the Riffe Center for Advocacy Day on March 23, 2023. Gov. DeWine included $20 million for domestic violence services in his proposed budget, but the legislature has the final say. Advocates met with 40 legislators to urge them to keep the funding in the budget, after hearing remarks from six of our legislative champions as well as Christa Hullaby, a survivor who told the crowd how Artemis Center in Dayton helped her escape her abuse.
At least 125 people attended ODVN’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month press conference in the Capitol on October 12, and 135 people attended virtually. We presented our annual Domestic Violence Fatality Report, which found that more children in Ohio died in FY2022 than in any year since ODVN began counting.
Guest speaker and survivor Kellie Elliot, of Preble County, whose abuser killed Kellie’s two children and then himself in January, spoke about her struggles to keep her children safe amid multiple system failures.
This year’s event honored two long-time advocates with ODVN’s annual Croucher Family Award for Outstanding Leadership: Bridget Mahoney, Immediate Past Board Chair of the Ohio Domestic Violence Network, former television anchor, and domestic violence survivor, and Kimberly Stanley, Victim Witness Director at the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office.
Our Organization
ODVN’s purpose is to support and strengthen Ohio’s response to domestic violence through training, public awareness, and technical assistance and to promote social change through the implementation of public policy. ODVN maintains a commitment to the empowerment of battered survivors and their children as well as to the elimination of personal, institutional, and cultural violence.
Our Mission
The Ohio Domestic Violence Network advances the principles that all people have the right to an oppression and violence-free life; fosters changes in our economic, social, and political systems; and brings leadership, expertise, and best practices to community programs.
