Elder Abuse Project

The Domestic Violence in Later Life training program was developed to increase understanding about elder abuse and domestic violence. The goals of the training are to increase the safety of the older battered person and reduce or eliminate violence and abuse against older individuals perpetrated by intimate partners, family, or other household members or caregivers.

To accomplish this goal ODVN provides complimentary training and technical assistance to elder service agencies, law enforcement, prosecutors, health care providers, domestic violence programs and elder abuse task forces. Our objectives are to promote model partnerships and service coordination, foster discussion on complex intervention issues, and establish a clearinghouse of resources for use by survivors, allied professionals, and community partners. The training, Recognizing Domestic Violence in Later Life, embodies ten principles to effectively assist with older victims of abuse. They are:

  • Elder abuse and domestic violence can happen to any older person
  • Every older person has a right to a life free of abuse and violence
  • Perpetrators of domestic violence in later life must be held accountable for their actions
  • Service professionals are critical to problem identification and victim assistance
  • Each service professional has a unique role and responsibility in problem identification and resolution
  • Service professionals are expected to follow state law in intervening in elder abuse and domestic violence situations
  • The key to stopping domestic violence in later life is victim empowerment and strong community support for survivors
  • Victims of abuse are empowered through information, support, safety planning and resource options
  • Respect for victim autonomy, choice, and confidentiality is central to any intervention
  • Communities are most effective in impacting elder abuse and domestic violence when service professionals coordinate activities and partner to develop appropriate interventions
