SUMMARY:What Happened to You? Understanding Trauma
DESCRIPTION:We all know that things we experience impact us in a variety of different ways. Events, whether positive or negative, can alter our behaviors, thoughts, feelings, or view of ourselves and the world. Anyone who works in social services encounters people who have experienced difficulties in their lives and a part of our job is to assist individuals in identifying the ways in which their experiences have impacted them. This training will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn about trauma and the ways in which experiencing trauma and stress impacts the lives of individuals. We will define traumatic stress, understand the way in which the body and the brain responds to stress, and learn ways to make our interactions with trauma survivors helpful and supportive. By shifting the question from, “What’s wrong with you? To “What happened to you?” and integrating knowledge of trauma into the way services are provided, programs can make services more compassionate and more empowering, which increasing safety and promoting healing. Participants will leave the training with practical, hand-on tools and guidance to increase their capacity to respond to survivors in a trauma-informed, strengths-based manner.
