Prevention Services

. Posted in Prevention Services

The prevention of intimate partner violence and family violence is a relatively new field, and one that is not sufficiently addressed by traditional training programs for health educators, social workers or advocates. ODVN recognizes the need to offer opportunities for learning and practice as it relates to prevention topics. Additional trainings include Advocacy in Prevention: Peaceful Relationships for Teens.

The Prevention Team also offers customized training services to Anthem and DELTA Project grantees, ODVN members, allied professionals, and other allied organizations. In addition the coalition has been able to showcase national leaders on key prevention topics. Recent experts included: Tony Porter of A Call to Men, and Byron Hurt who spoke about Engaging Men and Boys and pop culture, Dr. Joyce DeGruy-Leary who spoke about culturally relevant family violence prevention, and the New Mexico Media Literacy Project who trained Ohio's prevention community about media literacy.

Technical Assistance
As we join others who are working to prevent family violence, it has become clear that knowledge on the forms of family violence and its risk and protective factors is only the beginning when it comes to implementing effective strategies. Community-based models, collaboration, social change theory, program design, evaluation and the public health model are all common areas that challenge groups working in prevention.

Our customized technical assistance services are strategically designed to develop the knowledge, skills and motivation essential to practicing thoughtful prevention. The Prevention Team offers coaching, consultation, meeting facilitation and resource provision to Anthem and DELTA grantees as well as to ODVN members and allied professionals, and other allied organizations. ODVN’s Prevention Team works to build both capacity and competence in several key areas so that prevention practitioners are appropriately outfitted for this challenging work.

Prevention Programs Brochure

For more than a decade, ODVN has offered print and electronic resources on a wide range of topics to its members. Through Healthpath Foundation of Ohio, Ohio Department of Health (ODH), and DELTA funds, the clearinghouse is currently more purposefully acquiring prevention related titles.

One of the most critical supports for family violence prevention is linking people to people. Effective networking allows for the sharing of programs, lessons learned, strategies and resources. The ODVN Prevention Team works to cultivate relationships and foster the cross-fertilization of prevention knowledge among its local, state and national partners. An easy way to begin participating in this community of prevention-minded allies is to join the ODVN sponsored Ohio Prevents Domestic Violence listserv.
