Abuse in Later Life

Written by Amy Smith. Posted in Training - Descriptions and Information

This interactive workshop will help participants understand the dynamics of domestic violence in the context of victims age 50 and older who have a trust relationship with the perpetrator. The workshop will examine the similarities and differences between domestic violence in later life, domestic violence among younger populations, and other types of elder abuse, as we move towards a more effective understanding of the unique characteristics of domestic violence in later life. We will hear a story of a older survivor and her journey, and learn ways in which you can support and empower older survivors, while maintaining a focus on survivor autonomy and respect. Finally, we will discuss safety planning with older survivors of domestic violence, and ways to make our services and agency accessible to survivors of domestic violence.
