Violence Against Women According to the Bureau of Justice Stats - In 1998 females accounted for 75% of the victims of intimate murders and 85% of the victims of non-lethal intimate partner violence. According to estimates over 1.5 million women are raped and/or physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the U.S. (Extent, Nature and Consequences of Intimate Partner Violence, CDC, 2000). Every day, at least three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country (Intimate Partner Violence, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2000). Battered women account for up to a third of all visits to hospital emergency rooms, 25% of female suicides, 25% of women seeking emergency psychiatric help and 58% of women over 30 who have been raped (American Medical Association). Forty percent of teenage girls ages 14-17 report knowing someone their age who has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend (Kaiser Permante poll, 1995). Nearly a third of female victims of non-lethal intimate violence were victimized at least twice during the previous 6 months (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 1998). Research indicates that only 1 in 4 elder abuse incidents are reported (National Aging Resource Center on Elder Abuse, 1990). Between 10-40% of abused women report choking - incomplete strangulation - and blows to the head resulting in a loss of consciousness (Annals of Internal Medicine 1995). A study of pregnancy associated mortality found that homicide was the leading cause of death among pregnant women. Twenty percent of women who died during this period were murdered (JAMA, 2001). Half of female victims of intimate partner violence reported a physical injury, About 4 in 10 of these victims sought professional medical treatment. (Bureau of Justice Stats, 2000)
